A MOM’S ROLE IN THE HOME
It’s fitting that “Mom” upside down spells, “Wow.”
How many times has the world witnessed the amazing wonder of a mom’s love for her children? Time and time again, it’s mom who sets the example, gets the kids to practice, cooks the meals, pays the bills, nurses the sick child back to health, reads the bed time stories, helps finish the book report, cleans the house, folds the laundry, and (if that’s not enough), loves her children unconditionally.
To put it humbly—moms are selfless.
It would take a lifetime to measure the impact moms have had in this world. Scores of books have been written, detailing their legacy and influence on society. Not to mention the millions of Hallmark cards that praise moms for being the greatest blessing to mankind.
Therefore, the acronym provided below is but an attempt to capture the essence of mom depicted in the Bible.
MOTIVATOR—Moms are usually the most positive, and are always ready to give an encouraging word. No matter what, it is always mom who sees the good in her children. Paul describes a mother as someone who “loves her children” (Tit. 2:4) and “takes good care of them” (1 Thess. 2:7). God has gifted moms with such extraordinary hearts and undying love for their children. This is why moms are always the best motivators.
OVERSEER—It’s like the old saying goes, “A man’s work is sun to sun, but a mother’s work is never done.” In Proverbs 31, the picture of the wife and mother exemplifies a true woman of God. She is not only a woman of noble character, but also possesses great knowledge and skill in many trades. Lemuel writes, “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all” (Pro. 31:25-30). There is not much a mom doesn’t oversee or involve herself in. She oversees the day-to-day responsibilities in the home, and keeps track of every member of the family. Which explains why most families refer mom as the “glue” that keeps them together.
MENTOR—Right out the gate in Proverbs 1:8, Solomon writes to tell his son not to “forsake his mother’s teaching.” However, if a child does, the Bible labels him or her as “foolish” (Pro. 15:20). God has designed moms with a great ability to teach, model, and inspire her children to walk in the ways of God (Pro. 22:6). Moms are the world’s best mentors. Which is a powerful reason why children ought to honor and obey their moms. Abraham Lincoln said this about his mother, “All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” President Lincoln wasn’t the only person who did great things because of his mother’s mentorship. There are countless souls who did great and mighty things because of the love and support of a godly mom.
Know this truth. A family with a nurturing mom is a blessed family indeed. The love the children receive from their mom is unparalleled. Her selfless acts to her family are some of the greatest examples of Christ, and will produce some of the greatest rewards in heaven. In short, a mother’s love for her family closely resembles that of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8,
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
